Share & Care’s Village Upliftment (VU) Signature Program empowers rural India through the placement of Lokmitras (“Friends of the People”), who help to cultivate grassroots change within village societies. Lokmitras are college-educated women and men with deep-rooted passions for community service, and they are trained and supervised by seasoned NGO mentors with decades of experience in social work.
The role of Lokmitras is to raise awareness about (and offer solutions for) issues affecting entire communities — such as sanitation and hygiene, substance abuse, education, gender equality, infrastructure development, and much more. They also provide moral support and care for families in their villages, be it leveraging government aid, visiting the homes of sick or elderly individuals, securing resources during an emergency, or organizing celebrations that educate and unify. Their consistent presence makes change not only possible, but also sustainable. Our Village Upliftment program is currently empowering about 50,000 people at a cost of $1.00 per villager, or $5,000 per village in 12 Villages.
